Footnote to “Revelations of my Father..”

I must admit I’ve been needing to post this for weeks now, and it’s been lost in the shuffle.

For those of you who enjoyed my previous post titled, “Revelations of my Father through my Son”, this is a must read.  If you haven’t read that post, you’ll want to after reading this.

A few weeks after writing that post, pictures came home from school. My son was excited to share the class picture with me, and show me all of his friends, including the little boy I wrote about in “Revelations”.   Now, I need to preface this with the fact that I have done a little volunteering at school, and know some of the children by face.  When my son excitedly pointed out “J”, the boy in the story, my first response was,  “L, are you sure he’s deaf?”  I remembered seeing this boy when I volunteered in the cafeteria, and he didn’t seem deaf to me.  Did I miss something?  L’s response, “Well, actually I’m not sure.  Sometimes he can hear me, but he doesn’t always know what I’m saying.”

Long story short, turns out this boy is NOT deaf, he’s bi-lingual!!!!!  I could not help but burst into laughter.  Leave it to my son to try to speak sign language to a boy who is just bi-lingual!  I can’t help it, it makes me laugh!

In the end, the story is still the same.  They are still good friends, and have figured out their own way to communicate.  My son still saw someone who was struggling, and reached out to him.  I am still so proud.  Laughing, but proud;)
