What’s In Your Backpack?

There’s something about watching my son run from the car to the bus stop.  He loves school and can’t wait to go everyday.  He hops out of the car ready to go, but inevitably slows down somewhat under the struggle of the weight of his backpack.  It’s awkward and clumsy, but holds some of the essentials for the day…most importantly his lunch.

It got me to thinking.  Do you remember going to elementary school?  What weighed you down?  I wonder what worries he might be carrying in that backpack to school.  Remember the little things that troubled you as a kid, like getting the seat you wanted on the bus?  Would you get to sit with your friend at lunch? Will you get called on and not know the answer today?  Or maybe they were bigger troubles like, will you be bullied?  Will someone take your lunch money?  Will your only friend be absent?  So many things may be on the mind of a child as we send them off to the bus stop under the weight of their backpacks.  I try to think about this every day when he hops out of the car.  I give his backpack a little lift on the shoulders, look him in the eye and tell him I love him, I hope he has a wonderful day, and I can’t wait to see him when he gets home.  Some genuine kind words of support, whether needed at that moment or not, go a long way.

So what’s in your grown up “backpack”?  We all have one.  All the fears, challenges, and trepidation for the day we may be facing.  I challenge you to give yourself some kind words of support.  Better yet, give some kind words to someone else, even if you don’t know what they carry in their backpack.
